THE RIVERS PROJECT

Susan Coolen and Childe Roland [Canadian-Welsh] have been percolating on the converging themes of Child's exhaltation that 'the river writes its own name and tells its own story' and Susan's interests in the language of letter-like shapes in nature, and the nature of graphic form and shadow.

Childe Roland is an amazing poet and author [concrete-sound poetry]. He is also a prolific visual artist, producing literary and art objects as well as his sound poetry [folded and cut paper works, collages, constructions]. Coolen's most recent exhibits, 'The Language of Nature' and 'Grand Shadows' [a thematic installation based on the environs of the Grand River] have inspired Roland to send Susan some of his river-themed works and various small paper sculptures.

It is from this 'flow' of creative energy that the beginning ideas for an installation have been forming .... a collaborative exhibit that would include sound poetry, small & large scale cut-paper installations, photographic and video-sound works.

You can see many of Childe's works-on-paper here on this page, below the installation views.

Susan Coolen and Childe Roland's first project together is Astres / Stars / Goleuadau; an e-poetry, multimedia creation by Montreal's Agence TOPO, based on a poetic body of work by the Childe and the photographic images by Susan.
